MANILA, Philippines—A 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Surigao on Friday night has so far caused at least 14 aftershocks, state volcanologists said.
The tremor was recorded 173 kilometers southeast of Surigao City at 11:26 p.m, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The tectonic quake had a depth of 24 kilometers.
The quake was felt in the following areas:
Intensity IV – Surigao City; General Luna, Surigao del Norte
Intensity III -Tandag, Surigao del Sur
Intensity II – San Jose, Dinagat Island,Surigao del Norte; Bayabas and Tago, Surigao del Sur
The Phivolcs said that aftershocks are expected. From 11:51 p.m. until 8:25a.m. on Saturday morning, Phivolcs has recorded 14 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.2 to 4.9.
Most of the aftershocks were recorded northeast of Cortes town in Surigao del Sur.
