The new law repealed RA 8986, signed by President Joseph Estrada in 2001, which previously declared March 21 as a special working holiday in the city.

The capital of Oriental Mindoro since 1679, Calapan was originally founded as a town. On March 21, 1998, it was converted into a component city when its residents ratified RA 8475. —Julie M. Aurelio
