Dangerous heat index in 19 areas on Maundy Thursday

MANILA, Philippines — Nineteen areas across the country recorded “danger category” heat indices on Maundy Thursday, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration.

Based on Pagasa’s latest computed heat index forecast as of 5 p.m., Thursday, the highest heat index recorded was in Echague, Isabela and Roxas City, Capiz at 44ºC.

Heat index refers to the “measure of the contribution that high humidity makes with abnormally high temperatures in reducing the body’s ability to cool itself.”

Pagasa automatically tags indices ranging from 42ºC to 51ºC as “danger category” due to increased risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.
