MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered both the Senate and the House of Representatives to comment on consolidated petitions seeking to compel both chambers to enact a law against political dynasties.

“The SC required respondents, Senate and the House of Representatives, to comment on the petition within a non-extendible period of 10 days from notice,” the SC said in a press conference.

This came after a petition was recently filed by 1Sambayan coalition and other groups urging the Supreme Court to issue a ruling compelling Congress to comply with Article II, Section 26 of the Constitution by enacting a law prohibiting political dynasties.

Article 22, Section 26 states that “the state shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law.”

The petitioners also asked SC to require Congress to pass the law within one year from receipt of the high tribunal’s decision, should their petition be granted; and to hold Congress in contempt, should it fail to comply.

The SC said the 1Sambayan’s petition was consolidated with earlier petitions from the Kapatiran Party and Wilfredo Trinidad, which tackle the same matter.
