Volcano eruption triggers grassfire around Mt. Kanlaon slopes

MANILA, Philippines — A grassfire erupted at the upper slopes of the Kanlaon Volcano on Tuesday, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to Phivolcs, in an advisory at 2:47 p.m., the ongoing grassfire was observed at the eastern slopes of Kanlaon Volcano.

“[The grassfire] was ignited by superheated ballistic fragments that were thrown out of the crater by the explosive eruption [of Kanlaon Volcano],” said Phivolcs.

Meanwhile, Alert Level 3 continues to prevail over the volcano.

Kanlaon Volcano erupted around 5:51 a.m. on Tuesday, producing a voluminous bent plume approximately 4,000 meters tall.
