Saying the New People’s Army (NPA) would soon become an “insignificant threat,” the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-Elcac) on Wednesday renewed its call for its members to surrender.

Undersecretary Ernesto Torres Jr., NTF-Elcac executive director, told the NPA’s “remaining, depleted forces” to “embrace the opportunity to move forward.”

“We call on them to heed instead the call of the times and begin the new year with a focus on peace and development,” he said in a statement.

State forces, he added, have dismantled 88 out of 89 NPA guerrilla fronts and the government will continue to take down its financial and material support. —NESTOR CORRALES
