SPECIAL DEFENSE ECOZONE: Sen. Juan Miguel “Migz” F. Zubiri presides over the Committee on Economic Affairs hearing to discuss bills aimed at passing the Special Defense Economic Zone (SpeDEZ) Act and amending the Freeport Area of Bataan (FAB) Act. During Monday’s hearing, August 19, 2024, Zubiri said the committee learned that there is a considerable gap between investment pledges and actual investments in the country. “Clearly, we still have a lot to do for us to maximize on the investment promises coming our way. We are hopeful that we can solve a fair few of our investors’ problems with the CREATE MORE Act, which is currently in the period of debates, but we also need more specific legislation for our ecozones, to make them an attractive option for potential investors wanting to come into the country, and also investors wanting to stay in the country,” Zubiri explained. “The bottom line is that we must make the process of investing here as efficient and as painless as possible, and this pair of bills will go a long way towards making Bataan a crown jewel among our investment zones here in the Philippines,” he added.(Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau)

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri on Friday urged the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to raise awareness on the consequences of fraternity hazing.

The senator on Tuesday similarly called for a crackdown on physical violence in initiation rites after the death of a Grade 11 student in Nueva Ecija and the conviction of 10 fratmen in the case of law freshman Horacio “Atio” Castillo III.

A co-author of the 2018 anti-hazing law, Zubiri said in a statement, “We should look at the implementing rules and regulations. Get the [Department of the Interior and Local Government] involved. Get the CHEd involved. Get the DepEd involved.”

The 2018 act expanded the 1995 law to ban “all forms of hazing in fraternities, sororities, and organizations in school, including citizens’ military training and citizens’ army training.”
