JAKARTA, Indonesia — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit on Wednesday recognized Canada’s efforts to maintain security in the region.
Marcos Jr. lauded Canada’s role in maritime security in the time of escalating territorial tensions in the South China Sea.
He likewise cited Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, which is a plan for the country’s long-term growth by boosting economic relationships in the region, which includes the Asean.
“We certainly welcome the initiatives under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, such as training on smart border patrols, addressing crime and terrorism, and military-to-military capacity building, to name but a few,” said Marcos, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in attendance.
“We recognize Canada’s role in promoting maritime security and safety in the region. We welcome Canada’s continued engagement through capacity-building programs, specialized and skill-based training to counter traditional and emerging threats,” added Marcos Jr.
Marcos Jr. said that Canada and the Asean are natural partners, with shared values and mutual interests.
