MANILA, Philippines — A suspect died in an armed encounter with the authorities during a buy-bust operation in Cebu City early Friday morning, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

In a statement, PNP officer-in-charge Police Lieutenant General Vicente Danao Jr. said Mark Ronald Matig-a was killed while his cohort identified as June Tunacao eluded arrest during the joint buy-bust operation inside Chinese Cemetery, Barangay Careta, Cebu City.

Authorities recovered three kilograms of suspected crystal meth or shabby worth P20.4 million.

The pieces of drug evidence were brought to PNP Forensic Group Office 7 for forensic and laboratory examination, while Matig-a’s cadaver was brought to a funeral home.

Tunacao, meanwhile, is now the subject of a manhunt operation by local authorities.
