MANILA, Philippines — The consecutive earthquakes that rocked Camarines Sur and nearby provinces in the Bicol Region over the weekend were an earthquake swarm, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Monday. Phivolcs said a total of 27 earthquakes were recorded from Oct. 14 to Oct. 18. Renato Solidum, Science Undersecretary and Officer in Charge of Phivolcs, said the tremors were due to the movement of a subsurface fault. The US Geological Survey said an earthquake swarm was a sequence of mostly small quakes with no identifiable main activity. Swarms often recur at the same locations, and are usually short-lived, but can continue for days, weeks, or even months. Phivolcs said these swarms might occur in a “tectonically active region.”
