Reds ambush police vehicle, kill cop, wound detainee on way to court in Samar

P500,000 bounty up for killers of village chief

TACLOBAN CITY—A police officer was killed and a prisoner was wounded in an ambush by New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in Marabut town, Samar province early on Thursday (Dec. 10).

Killed was Capt. Earl Hembro while detainee Nestor Lumagpas,Jr. was wounded.

Reports reaching the regional headquarter of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Palo town, Leyte province said the ambush targets were aboard a police vehicle coming from Basey town, also in Samar, for a court hearing.

On their way back to Marabut, the police officer and prisoner were waylaid by guerrillas.

The police officer died on the spot. Patrolman Joseph Ricky Catgacoa, who was driving the police vehicle, was unharmed.
