Toll on EDSA? ‘Not under Duterte’, Palace says

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang denied Monday the supposed proposal to impose a toll on EDSA to reduce the volume of vehicles plying the traffic-choked highway.

“Wala pong ganung initiative sa pamahalaan ni Presidente Duterte. Kung meron man sa ibang Presidente po ‘yun,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a televised Palace press briefing.

Department of Transportation (DOTr) consultant Alberto Suansing was quoted in a news report claiming that the agency is looking to put up tolls along Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfare to collect fees at certain hours to solve traffic jams.

But in a statement, the agency said the proposal has not been formally discussed yet by the present DOTr administration.
