The House Committee on Metro Manila Development on Wednesday tackled the rise in the number of accidents involving concrete barriers along Edsa’s designated bus lane—of which at least 67 have been recorded since the barriers were set up on the beltway in June.
In an online hearing, Jojo Garcia, general manager of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, explained to the committee that “Most of these [accidents] were cases of overspeeding by buses.”
He added that “if only we just follow the 50 km/hr speed limit then there would have been no accidents.”
Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade also defended the busway, which is assigned to the innermost lane of Edsa. He explained to the committee that the busway followed the international standard of at least 3.5 meters in width.—KRIXIA SUBINGSUBING
