MANILA, Philippines—President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Court of Appeals Justice Samuel Gaerlan to the Supreme Court, presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo announced Wednesday.

Gaerlan fills the vacancy in the High Tribunal which was created when then-Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta was named Chief Justice on Oct. 23, 2019.

He bested five other nominees, namely, his fellow CA justices Manuel Barrios, Ramon Garcia, Jhosep Lopez and Eduardo Peralta, and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez.

Panelo said Gaerlan will take his oath on Monday afternoon.
