CAGAYAN DE ORO , Philippines —-A wayward jeepney overturned Friday afternoon after negotiating a downhill portion of the Diosdado Macapagal highway here, injuring 14 of its passengers who are all Grade 11 students.

Traffic investigator Staff Sgt. Rey Corpus said the jeepney lost its brakes while going downhill.

Police said the jeepney slowed down after hitting a vehicle in front of it. However, police said the jeepney had already gathered enough momentum to cause it to overturn on the road shoulder.

The 14 senior high school students of the Merry Child School in Barangay Bulua, were rushed by first-aid responders to the J.R. Borja Hospital in this city for treatment.

Corpus said the students have just finished their retreat at the Xavier University and hired the jeepney to bring them back to their school.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Region 10 director Aminoden Guro said the agency will be investigating the incident.
