9 make it to short list for Carpio’s post at Supreme Court

MANILA, Philippines — Eight Court of Appeals justices and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez made it to the Judicial and Bar Council’s (JBC) short list of nominees for the Supreme Court seat to be vacated by Justice Antonio Carpio on Oct. 26.

The nominated appeals magistrates include Justices Manuel Barrios, Edgardo delos Santos, Japar Dimaampao, Ramon Garcia, Jhosep Lopez, Pablito Perez, Ricardo Rosario and Maria Filomena Singh.

Marquez, Delos Santos, Dimaampao, Garcia, Lopez and Singh are also in the JBC’s short list of 10 nominees for the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Francis Jardeleza on Sept. 26.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, JBC ex officio member, said the results of the voting on Friday was immediately transmitted to Malacañang.

He added that the JBC scheduled next Tuesday the voting for the vacancy to be left by Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 on Oct. 18.
