The provisional P1-increase in the minimum jeepney fare takes effect today, July 6, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said.

LTFRB has approved to raise the fare from the current P8 minimum to P9 in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon, according to the order released Friday.

The provisional fare increase applies to the first four kilometers in jeepney rides, the LTFRB order noted, adding there should be no increase in the succeeding kilometers.

Last May, several transport groups have asked for the fare increase amid the rising prices of fuel.

“The Board is aware of the present economic state of every Filipino brought about by the rise in oil prices in the world market and the continuous acceleration of inflation rate,” the LTFRB said.

Jeepney operators were directed by the agency to post the notice of fare hike inside their vehicles.   /kga
